Presenting the Komi New Testament!

In early October the Komi people celebrated the publishing of the Komi language New Testament.

The Estonian language article was written by the General Secretary of the Estonian Bible Society, Jaan Bärenson, who represented Estonian missions translatorsat  this event.

Unfortunately, a full Estonian translation is not available.

Left:  Komi Bible translators  Nina Vattuleva and Iraida Popova.

The first Komi language translation of the  Bible was completed in the 14th century by an Orthodox priest, Stephan of Perm using the unique Komi alphabet.  Unfotunately this translation was soon destroyed by a later generation of Russian Orthodox leaders.  The Komi alphabet was also squeezed out of existence, replaced by the Russian cyrillic alphabet as Russian became the only language acceptable to the Russian government who now controlled Komikomi . Modern Komi writing continues to use the cyrillic alphabet.

In 1991, the late Komi protestant pastor, Vassili Popov completed his private translation, a work accomplished over several decades in secret from the Soviet authorities.  However, Vassili Popov's translation was not considered acceptable by Christians of other denominations and so was not widely used.  The photo above was taken in Rev. Popov's church, which is now lead by his son Daniil.  The photo in the top right shows one of Vassili Popov's daughters holding the new Komi New Testament.

The new Komi New Testament now makes atleast this part of the Bible available to all Komi Christians, protestant and Orthodox alike.
